rELATIONSHIPS · LEARNING · INNER SELF

My Dear Friend,
Making the transition from college or moving from roles such as a scientist working independently in a lab to becoming an employee in a commercial organization can be difficult. Many people do it, some more successfully than others.
You may think you are responsible for getting the job done and sometimes, when others are unsure, you may step in and do the work for them. Then you misunderstand their reaction to you. You may think they don’t appreciate you or they don’t like you. You may lose confidence in yourself.
One of the most important things you can do is to get to know your colleagues. Make time to talk with them and build meaningful relationships. By understanding individual strengths and perspectives, you can support one another and work together as a cohesive team. Approach goals and challenges with an open and neutral mindset. You can do good things as an individual but a collaborative team with multiple perspectives can achieve great things working together.
At this time in the early stages of your career, go inside yourself and ask your inner self what is most important. Define your long-term goals and what you want to achieve by the end of your life, understanding that these objectives are unique to each person.
Take every opportunity to learn from others, including more senior people who have walked the path before you. You don’t have to do everything they do but you can learn what is helpful and what isn’t. Every situation is an opportunity to learn. Good managers may teach you helpful practices but if you find yourself working for someone you think is a bad manager you can learn what not to do.
When faced with difficulties, don’t walk away. Know who you are and have confidence in yourself. Talk with people you trust before making major changes. Everything is constantly changing and bad situations get better in the end.
Find daily practices, both physical and mental, that you enjoy. Take care of your body — it’s the temple for your soul. Find meditations or affirmations that bring happiness and fulfillment to your inner self.
Yours truly,
One who has walked the path
